Career Path of Ioan Gruffudd
Gruffudd made his acting debut in the 1986 Welsh TV film Austin when he was just 13 years old. From 1987 to 1994, he starred in the Welsh language soap opera Pobol y Cwm (People of the Valley). In addition to acting, he was a member of the Pobol y Cwm football team Cwmderi FC alongside co-stars Hywel Emrys, Gwyn Elfyn, and Ieuan Rhys. He also participated in school and community productions and the Urdd Eisteddfod’s 1991 production of Cwlwm at this time.
He enrolled at London’s Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) when he was 18 years old, in 1992. However, he was mainly cast in supporting roles in the Academy’s shows, leaving him feeling alienated and aimless. But in his final year, 1995, he played George (Jörgen) Tesman, Hedda Gabler’s husband, in Ibsen’s Hedda Gabler. After seeing him in this part, the producers of the 1996 TV adaptation of Poldark cast him in the title character.
After making his debut as Oscar Wilde’s lover John Gray in 1997’s Wilde, he played Fifth Officer Harold Lowe in the critically acclaimed picture Titanic. Later, he played Horatio Hornblower on the ITV1 and A&E series Hornblower, based on the novels by C. S. Forester. He commented, “It was pretty something for an unknown actor to get the role. For this, I will be eternally indebted to Hornblower…. In a perfect world, I’d get to play this guy for his entire life. To have the same actor portray him from his time as a midshipman all the way through to his time as an Admiral would be very remarkable. So, naturally, I want to keep playing this guy till he dies.
Acting as British abolitionist William Wilberforce in the 2007 historical drama Amazing Grace, he won widespread acclaim for his performance. Gruffudd has voiced DC and Marvel Comics characters, including Mister Fantastic (Reed Richards) in Fantastic Four (2005) and Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (2007), and the voice of Mister Miracle in Justice League Unlimited (2004–06).
